Such a leap leads to flawed perceptions of the world, confirmation bias, and decisional blunders that parallel the kinds of losses seen at the poker table when irrational bets are made without strong hands. Rational belief—grounded in evidence and open to adjustment—is the superior model, both in pursuit of truth and in practical life decisions. This approach avoids the risks inherent in leaps of faith and promotes intellectual integrity that benefits all areas of life where informed, balanced beliefs are essential.

    Phil,

    I think I have to push back strongly on the point you’re attempting to make here. The first question I would ask is where are you getting your information from, because it seems to be strongly at odds with the Christian/Biblical system of faith to which I am acquainted?

    The Bible, and the personalities within the Bible (at least for the most part), does/do not promote a binary conception of belief. It might promote a binary conception to some elements of belief, but across the board faith/trust is portrayed biblically as anything but cut and dried… up or down. You claimed that “biblical faith often implies unwavering certainty that does not fluctuate with shifts in evidence…” Is that your understanding of biblical Christian ideology? I could point to numerous biblical narratives that belie that notion. 

    I would actually agree that “static belief” that doesn’t respond to evidence is, or leans toward, an unwarranted or irrational position. There are some areas of the Bible that seem to promote that, however other areas contravene that position. It depends, I believe, on who is being spoken to, and what the situation is. “Faith” as a concept and reality is a tricky subject. Any call to trust is subject to the factors at play. I would contend that the biblical God calls believers to trust, but doesn’t set up a binary on it. Jesus, himself, had several instances where this came into play, sometimes implicitly and other times in as many words.

    To your conclusion you said that “rational belief demands evidence alignment.” I can’t speak for all professing Christians, but I try to exercise that notion.

      Just to confirm, you agree that rational belief is a degree of belief that maps to the degree of the relevant evidence. Right? And no actual God honors an irrational degree of belief that does not actually map to the relevant degree of the evidence, right?

There are probably exceptions that would have to be taken on a case by case basis. When delving into more natural vs. supernatural debates it could get dicey, but yes, I would concur.
